Nearly 85 per cent of Design Week readers believe 2010 will be a better year for design businesses than 2009, according to a poll on www.designweek.co.uk.
The survey shows that 84.9 per cent of respondents think this year will be an improvement on the last, while 15.1 per cent believe it won’t.
Ian Cochrane, chairman of management consultancy Tice Group, told Design Week last September, ‘The fourth quarter of this year will be tough, as will the first quarter of next year. I believe there will be some pickup next year, but I think it will be about 12 months before it becomes noticeable.’
His comments followed a report from the National Institute of Economic and Social Research that declared the recession to be officially over.
Speaking to Design Week at the same time, Amanda Merron, partner at accountant Kingston Smith W1, said the fourth quarter of 2009 could see the start of an upturn in the design industry, which would fully manifest itself in 2010. She added that the economy could be stimulated by the build-up to the London 2012 Olympics, and the 2010 Football World Cup in South Africa.
