Can Designers help with relief in Haiti....

Spotted in Design week online...by Tom Banks...

Designers are being called upon by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design to liaise with relief organisations and assess how design can help with rehabilitation projects in earthquake-stricken Haiti.

In support of United Nations reconstruction plans, designers ‘from all disciplines’, academics, design students and developmental workers are being invited to join a dialogue, initially through a ‘Uniting Designers in Disaster’ Facebook page.

ICSID president Mark Breitenberg says that the organisation is well positioned to enact change. He says, ‘ICSID is poised with the strategic understanding of the processes required by non-governmental organisations to develop and implement result-driven initiatives.’

The aim is to ‘engage designers to exchange information about initiatives and opportunities where they may contribute their design and problem-solving skills’, Breitenberg adds.

This, he hopes, will help Haiti reach ‘long-term stabilisation and reconstruction objectives’.
